Guterres expressed sympathy with the families of the flood victims in Baghlan

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his sympathy to the families of the flood victims in Baghlan province and said that the UN agencies and their partners are in coordination with the Afghan government to quickly assess the needs and provide emergency aid to the flood victims.


Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Stephen de Jaric, the spokesman of the United Nations Secretary General, published a statement yesterday evening (Saturday, May 11) and said that Mr. Guterres was "saddened" by the flood casualties in Baghlan province.
 
The Secretary General of the United Nations has expressed his solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and said that the United Nations agencies and their partners are in coordination with the government to quickly assess the needs and provide emergency aid to the flood victims.
 
The foreign ministries of Pakistan and Uzbekistan have also expressed their sympathy with the people of Afghanistan and the families of the victims after the flood in Baghlan.
 
In addition, the representation of the European Union in Afghanistan, the embassies of Japan and Turkey in Kabul and the Iranian consulate in Mazar-e-Sharif have also expressed their sympathy to the families of the victims.
 
Yesterday, the devastating flood engulfed the city of Pul Khomri, the capital of Baghlan province, and a number of its districts.
 
According to the statistics of the World Food Program, more than 300 people have died and 1000 houses have been destroyed due to floods in this province.
 
After this flood, Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights for Afghanistan, called for urgent help.
 
People's sources have said that the flood has left the most casualties and damages in Barka and Baghlan districts, and 250 people have died in these two districts alone.
 
The Food and Agriculture Office of the United Nations (FAO) has said that this flood has been unprecedented in Baghlan in the last 50 years.
