The Turkish parliament will soon approve Sweden's NATO membership plan

7 Jan 2024 - 10:29

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says that the Turkish Parliament will soon approve Sweden's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Blinken stated this on Saturday night, January 6, after finishing his trip to Turkey and meeting with the officials of this country.

In this regard, he said: "In Turkey, we discussed the final steps in the process of approving Sweden's accession to NATO in the coming weeks."

10 days ago, the Foreign Relations Committee of the Turkish Parliament approved Sweden's plan to join this military pact.

Officials in Ankara have not yet commented on this matter.

Earlier, a source from the Turkish parliament, whose name was not mentioned in the report, told the Riannosti news agency that the country's government is not in a hurry to join Sweden in NATO.

It should be noted that Finland and Sweden, countries located in Northern Europe and bordering Russia, have requested NATO membership after Moscow's military attack on Ukraine.

Türkiye approved Finland's membership in March last year.

Nearly two years have passed since Sweden's proposal, Enkara has not yet approved Sweden's membership due to its security concerns.

One of the prerequisites for Ankara's approval of Sweden's membership in NATO is the receipt of American F-16 fighter jets.

This is despite the fact that not long ago, US President Joe Biden said that his country supports the modernization of "F-16" fighters in Turkey.
