Iraq is preparing to end the mission of the US-led international coalition

6 Jan 2024 - 12:09

The office of the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammad Shia al-Sudani, announced on Friday that the Iraqi government will begin the process of withdrawing the international military coalition led by the United States from the country.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The United States has 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq, and says it is helping local forces prevent the resurgence of ISIS, which seized large parts of both countries in 2014 before being defeated.

The Sudanese statement came a day after the United States killed a militant leader in Baghdad, angering Iran-aligned groups who called on the government to end the coalition's presence in Iraq.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office said: "The government is setting a date for the start of the work of the bilateral committee to establish arrangements for the permanent end of the presence of international coalition forces in Iraq."

A government official said the committee would include representatives of the military coalition.

The Pentagon has announced that the US military carried out Thursday's attack in retaliation for recent attacks on American soldiers.

Militant groups aligned with Iran in Iraq and Syria are opposed to Israel's war in the Gaza Strip and hold America partly responsible for it./Ariana News
