UN Secretary General: The Gaza war has weakened the credibility and authority of the Security Council

11 Dec 2023 - 9:52

After the failure of the Security Council to approve the cease-fire resolution in Gaza, which was vetoed by the United States, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres questioned the duty of this international body and said that the war in Gaza has weakened the credibility and legitimacy of the UN Security Council.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: After the unprecedented action of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in activating Article 99 of the UN Charter to establish an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, which failed due to the veto of the United States, Guterres emphasized today, Saturday.

This article, which has been used only 9 times in the history of the United Nations by the then secretaries-general of this organization, allows the secretary-general to invite the members of the Security Council to an urgent meeting in cases where he feels that the "security and peace of the world" is in danger.

Speaking at a conference in Doha, the capital of Qatar, Guterres admitted in a rare statement that "the Gaza war has weakened the credibility and legitimacy of the UN Security Council."

The United States of America vetoed the UN Security Council resolution to establish an immediate ceasefire in Gaza early Saturday.

13 council members voted in favor of this resolution. England abstained and America vetoed it.

The vote on this resolution was postponed due to the efforts of several Arab countries to persuade America to refuse to veto it.

America has been the main supporter of this regime since the beginning of Israel's military attacks in Gaza and has helped fuel the war by sending weapons and political support.

In the weeks leading up to the war, Joe Biden's administration, in the face of continued calls for help in establishing a cease-fire in Gaza, said the White House only supported "ceasefires" in Gaza and was not in favor of a cease-fire that could benefit Hamas.

Meanwhile, human rights activists and some politicians of the Democratic Party have repeatedly asked Biden to put pressure on Israel to end the operation that killed thousands of civilians.

In the continuation of his speech, Guterres added: I asked the Security Council to put pressure to prevent a humanitarian disaster and I repeated my request to declare a humanitarian ceasefire.

"Unfortunately, the Security Council was unable to do this, but that does not make it any less important," he said.

Guterres also emphasized: "I will not give up."

This is despite the fact that as a result of the Zionist regime's attacks on Gaza, more than 17,000 people, half of whom are children, have been martyred.
