Russia suspended the nuclear agreement with Japan

12 Nov 2023 - 9:25

International media have reported that Russia has suspended the cooperation agreement with Japan regarding the destruction of Moscow's nuclear waste.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: A document published on the official website of the Russian government shows that the Prime Minister of this country, Mikhail Mishustin, signed a decree on Tuesday, November 7, suspending the 1993 agreement with Japan.

In this statement, the reason for Moscow's decision is not mentioned, but it is emphasized that the Russian Foreign Ministry will inform Japan about this action.

Russia's relations with Japan have become worse than before after Moscow's military invasion of Ukraine in February last year and Tokyo joining Western countries in imposing punitive sanctions.

Russia agreed in 1993 that the Vladivostok-based Pacific Fleet would stop dumping liquid radioactive waste in the Sea of Japan, but asked wealthier countries to help it process the waste for underground burial.

According to the Independent, under the suspended agreement with Japan, Tokyo was supposed to help with nuclear disarmament, including the dismantling of nuclear submarines, but Japanese media reported that this has been suspended because Moscow has stopped sending the necessary information to Tokyo.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Republic, on Thursday, November 2, also signed the bill to cancel the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of his country. He said that the cancellation of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which Russia joined in 2000, reflects the position of the United States, which, despite signing the treaty, did not ratify it.

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1996, prohibits member states from carrying out any nuclear explosion anywhere on their territory, although the treaty was never fully implemented.

There are now widespread concerns that Russia will resume its nuclear tests with the aim of dissuading the West from continuing military aid to Ukraine.
