Turkmenistan sends humanitarian aid to Herat

14 Oct 2023 - 15:54

One week after the disaster, Turkmenistan’s government sent three shipments of medicine, food, and clothing to help the quake-hit people of Herat.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)_Monitoring, The Afghan Consulate in Mary, Turkmenistan, has confirmed the dispatch of three substantial shipments from Ashgabat to support the earthquake-affected residents of Herat, containing essential items such as food supplies, clothing, and spices.

Turkmenistan has announced that these three large shipments have been sent to the earthquake-affected people of Herat through the Torghundi port.

Officials have stated that these three shipments have been handed over to the interim government authorities in the Herat province and will be distributed to the earthquake victims as quickly as possible.

Previously, UNICEF had reported that 90% of the recent earthquake victims in Herat are women and children.

Rina Amiri, serving as the Special Representative for Afghanistan in Women, Girls, and Human Rights, has emphasized a concerning aspect of the earthquake’s impact on Herat. She points out that a significant proportion of the earthquake casualties in Herat comprises women and children.

In response to this critical situation, she underscores the essential role played by female workers in non-governmental organizations who are actively involved in delivering vital aid to the victims of this tragic event. Their dedication and commitment are instrumental in helping the vulnerable groups affected by the earthquake, particularly women and children, during this challenging time.

These three relief shipments from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan have been sent as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recently announced a need for $14.4 million to provide shelter, heating, and winter clothing to the earthquake victims.
