25 Sep 2023 - 10:37

Pakistani media reported that after the establishment of the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan, 600,000 Afghan refugees have entered the country, bringing the total number of Afghan refugees in Pakistan to 3.7 million.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Express Tribune reported that the total number of Afghan refugees in Pakistan has reached 3.7 million.

On the other hand, according to the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of Afghan refugees in Pakistan reached 3.5 million in June 2023.

Qaisar Khan Afridi, the spokesperson of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, recently said that in addition to the new refugees, Pakistan hosts another 1.3 million refugees who have received identity cards from the country's government.

He added that over the past two years, more than 16,000 Afghans have returned to Afghanistan through the voluntary return program of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

In 2017, the government of Pakistan issued identity cards to around 800,000 Afghan refugees, which expired this year.

Afridi noted: "The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is negotiating with the Pakistani authorities to renew the registration card of Afghan refugees, and they hope to achieve a positive result in this regard."

This is despite the fact that the government of Pakistan has recently accelerated the forced deportation of Afghan refugees from this country.

In addition to expelling illegal Afghan asylum seekers, the police of this country have even detained and finally deported a number of asylum seekers who have residence documents with them.
