World Food Program:

One billion dollars is needed to prevent human catastrophe in Afghanistan

14 Sep 2023 - 12:05

The World Food Program (WFP) has once again called for aid for Afghanistan and said that one billion dollars is needed to prevent a humanitarian disaster in this country.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: This United Nations agency wrote on the X social network today, Wednesday, September 13, that the World Food Program can now "only provide one out of five people in Afghanistan who need food aid to survive." to support

The World Food Program announced on September 5 that from now on, the program can only help three million Afghans in need per month.

The announcement said that the World Food Program in Afghanistan was forced to reduce food aid to another two million people facing hunger in September, bringing the total number of people who will be denied WFP support this year to ten.

Shaw Wei Li, head of the World Food Program in Afghanistan, said in this regard: "During the alarming level of hunger and nutrition, we are obliged to choose between the hungry and those whose lives are in danger due to severe hunger."

According to Shao Wei Li, with the few resources that this organization has available, it cannot take care of all those who are on the verge of complete poverty.

After the World Food Program's decision, Save the Children warned that the exclusion of two million needy Afghans from humanitarian aid would bring more misery to Afghan children.

Irshad Malek, the head of the organization for the protection of children in Afghanistan, asked the international community to adhere to its obligations towards the people of Afghanistan on December 6th.

He said that children and their families in Afghanistan are at the breaking point after years of drought and economic crisis.

According to Malik, in a recent survey conducted by this organization in some provinces, three quarters of children (76.1 percent) said that they eat less than last year.

Malek said based on the survey, families are struggling to cope with hunger and more children are being pushed into unsafe situations such as child labour.

According to United Nations statistics, currently more than 29 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian aid in various sectors.

Also, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that in the current year, 3.23 billion dollars were needed for providing aid in Afghanistan, but by August, only about 1 billion dollars had been provided, and 2.43 billion dollars of the budget is still lacking.
