The US Congress is investigating Khalilzad and 8 other officials about leaving Afghanistan

2 Sep 2023 - 11:08

Michael McCall, the head of the foreign relations committee of the US House of Representatives, says that he has requested the transcribed interview of Khalilzad and 8 former US officials to investigate the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Michael McCall, the head of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, previously on August 20, also considered the documents presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this country regarding the chaotic exit from Afghanistan as repetitive and irrelevant.

On that date, McCall said in a statement that the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who are responsible for preparing the documents for leaving Afghanistan to the Senate should appear for the transcribed interview no later than August 21.

Recently, at the same time as the second anniversary of the withdrawal of the last American soldier from Afghanistan, Michael McCall said again that he considers this withdrawal to be irregular and deadly.

He has transcribed interviews of nine former officials, including Ross L. Wilson, the former head of the US Embassy in Kabul, Brian McKeon, the former US Assistant Secretary of State for Management and Resources, Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US Special Representative for Afghanistan Peace Affairs, and John Bess, the former US ambassador to Afghanistan, has requested.

McCall said that through his ongoing investigation, he has come to the conclusion that these people have important information to discover how and why the Biden administration left Afghanistan, surrendered to the Islamic Emirate, and killed 13 American soldiers.

He added that everything that happened could have been prevented.

According to him, he will not rest until the American people get the transparency and answers they deserve.

McCall emphasized that the Foreign Relations Committee of the US House of Representatives will continue to interview current and former officials of the Biden administration who are involved in the planning and implementation of the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

He told these 9 American officials to contact the Foreign Relations Committee of the House of Representatives and arrange their transcribed interviews by September 7, 2023.

I have to say; On April 14, 2021, US President Joe Biden announced that he had decided to end operations in Afghanistan, which became the longest foreign military operation in US history. The United States started this war in October 2001. At the peak of operations in 2013-2010, the number of Western forces in Afghanistan exceeded 150 thousand people. The withdrawal of American forces began in May 2021. The main US and NATO combat units left Afghanistan in 2014.

After the announcement of the United States' readiness to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan in the spring of 2021, the forces of the Islamic Emirate began a large-scale operation to establish control over the country. On August 15, 2021, the former president of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani fled the country and the Islamic Emirate entered Kabul without a conflict. By early September 2021, the US military has completely left Afghanistan, ending the nearly 20-year occupation of Afghanistan.
