31 Aug 2023 - 14:19

The officers of the Gabonese army, who seized power in a coup d'état on Wednesday, have unanimously nominated General Brice Oligo Nguema as the head of the transitional government in this West African country.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Gabon's military announced that General Brice Clouter Oligoi Ngoma, who was previously the head of the elite Republican Guard of this Central African country, has been elected as the transitional president.

According to the Washington Post, the leaders of the coup announced in a televised statement that "Oligoy" was unanimously chosen for this position.

Oligo is the son of the uncle of the former president of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondiba, who won the country's elections early Wednesday. Bongo was arrested hours later by coup plotters who say the election was rigged.

Gabon is currently the latest African country to experience a military coup after Niger last month and Mali in 2022.

Gabon is one of the former French colonies in Africa and one of the major oil producers in this continent. This country is a member of OPEC.
