Inconclusive talks to end the Ukraine war in Saudi Arabia; Moscow demanded surrender of Kiev

8 Aug 2023 - 10:10

Two days after an inconclusive meeting held in Saudi Arabia to resolve the Ukraine crisis, the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that only the surrender of Kiev can end the ongoing war in this country.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): This meeting was held with the mediation of Riyadh, while reports indicate the lack of progress in the negotiations between the participating parties.

At the same time, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated in a statement announcing this matter: "We are really convinced that a comprehensive, sustainable and just solution is possible only if the Kiev regime ends hostilities and terrorist attacks." ».

According to Ms. Zakharova, in order to resolve the current crisis in Ukraine: "the new territorial realities (in the east and south of Ukraine) must be recognized, the process of demilitarization and de-Nazization in Ukraine must be ensured" and the government of Ukraine must be based on neutral status. "Non-nuclear and non-committal emphasis should be established."

These demands are exactly the ones that were raised by Moscow and rejected by Kiev when the Russian military attack on Ukraine began in February 2022.

Maria Zakharova's comments come two days after Saudi Arabia hosted a meeting on Ukraine in Jeddah.

In this meeting, which was held without the presence of Russia, in addition to Western delegations, representatives of emerging powers that have close ties with Moscow participated.

As expected, the meeting ended without reaching any tangible progress and without issuing a final statement after long discussions between the various delegations present.
