Serious differences between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi centered on the leadership of the Arab world

20 Jul 2023 - 9:24

In a report, the American newspaper Wall Street Journal addressed the sharp disagreement between Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, and Mohammed bin Zayed, the president of the United Arab Emirates, and wrote: The crisis, the signs of which have been visible for a long time, has become a reality since last December.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The UAE and Saudi Arabia are two Arab countries that, despite cooperation in some regional issues, witnessed hidden contradictions in their relations in the past decade.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia moved together in opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood, the tension with Qatar, the war against Yemen, and even the Palestinian issue, but at the same time, they also found serious differences with each other in Yemen.

The UAE was not satisfied with Saudi Arabia's de-escalation of tensions with Qatar without informing Abu Dhabi. The UAE and Abu Dhabi had serious differences, especially in the Yemen war, and each of them, while supporting a specific group in Yemen, competed with each other to increase their influence in this country and became two serious rivals in Yemen.

What made this situation was the competition of both countries to have the upper hand in the Arab world.

The Wall Street Journal quoted some figures close to bin Salman and bin Zayed wrote: "Although these two figures were close in the past, they have not spoken to each other for more than six months now."

Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi crown prince, who, according to the Wall Street Journal, considered Mohammed bin Zayed "his guide" in domestic and foreign policy, expected that bin Zayed would not challenge Saudi Arabia's regional position and move in line with Saudi Arabia.

However, like Bin Salman, Bin Zayed is an ambitious leader who is not displeased to challenge Bin Salman and even prove his weaknesses.

The Wall Street Journal quoted an official of US President Joe Biden's administration as saying: "Bin Salman and Bin Zayed are two very ambitious personalities who want to be the main players in the region and the first people to be sheltered."

Mohammed bin Zayed's challenge to Bin Salman was even made public because the head of the UAE did not attend the two meetings of Arab heads of state in Saudi Arabia.

The meeting of the leaders of the Arab countries and China, as well as the meeting of the Arab League with the presence of Syria, are two meetings that Muhammad bin Zayed did not participate in, while Muhammad bin Salman, to prove his exit from the isolation imposed on him by the American government in the past two years, The strong participation of the leaders of all Arab countries, especially countries such as the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman, was needed.

This pattern of behavior of Bin Zayed caused dissatisfaction and anger of Muhammad Bin Salman. The American newspaper Wall Street Journal wrote, quoting some eyewitnesses: "Last December, bin Salman gathered domestic journalists in Riyadh for an unprecedented briefing and conveyed a strange message to them, saying, the UAE, our old ally for the past few decades. He stabbed us in the back and we have to see what we can do."
