Officials of the Ministry of Public Health in the celebration of the World Anti-Tobacco Day under the slogan "Grow food, not tobacco" said that 27% of Afghan people regularly consume tobacco, of which 6.2% are women.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Dr. Mohammad Hassan Ghiathi, Deputy Minister of Planning and Policy of the Ministry of Public Health, yesterday, Wednesday, May 31, at the celebration ceremony of the World Anti-Tobacco Day under the slogan "Grow food, not tobacco" in Kabul, said that every year Worldwide, 8 million people die from tobacco use.
He also stated that another 2 million will die due to exposure to its indirect smoke.
Ghiathi added that tobacco smoke is one of the factors of air pollution that causes dangerous diseases such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive disease or cardiovascular diseases.
Ghayashi added; According to a study conducted by the non-communicable disease management department of the Ministry of Public Health and some institutions, 45.5% of deaths in Afghanistan are caused by non-communicable diseases.
He stated that young people are more at risk of non-communicable diseases than the elderly. Because the use of tobacco is more among young people than among the elderly.
Ghiashi continued that nearly 20% of Afghan people use smokeless tobacco (Naswar), and more than 93% of users use manufactured cigarettes and the remaining 7% use Hookah.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mohammad Naeem Safi, on behalf of the World Health Organization, gave information about the World No Tobacco Day and promised that the World Health Organization will continue its continuous and technical support with the Ministry of Public Health.
Anti-Tobacco Day is celebrated in Kabul while the Islamic Emirate implements the nationwide destruction of poppy fields in the country.
