UNICEF expressed concern about the possibility of transmission of polio from Nangarhar to other provinces of Afghanistan

29 May 2023 - 15:09

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has considered the registration of three positive cases of polio in Nangarhar province as a cause for concern and has announced the start of polio vaccination in eastern Afghanistan to prevent the spread of this disease to other parts of the country.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Sayed Kamal Shah, Public Relations Officer of the UNICEF Polio Eradication Program, told Azadi Radio: "It is because Nangarhar is on the way to Pakistan and people travel through Torkham to Pakistan and from Pakistan to Afghanistan.” There is a lot, the possibility of transmission of the virus is very high. So it is very worrying."

The first positive case of polio this year was recorded in Bati Kot district of Nangarhar.

Two days later, another incident was confirmed in Kot district of this province, and the third incident was reported last week from Nazian district of Nangarhar.

Syed Kamal Shah added that UNICEF, with the help of its partners (the Ministry of Public Health of the Islamic Emirate and the World Health Organization), is taking measures to control this situation, including launching an anti-polio vaccination campaign in the eastern regions of Afghanistan on June 12 this year.

He clarified: "The polio campaign is planned for June 12, which will be implemented in the east of the country, including Nangarhar province. In this round, about 1.1 million children will be vaccinated."

However, the Head of Public Relations of UNICEF's Polio Eradication Program emphasized the important role of mothers and fathers in polio prevention.

He added that if you vaccinate your children in every campaign, the risk of contracting polio will be reduced.

Polio is a viral disease that spreads from person to person.
