Expressing America's concern about the President's visit to Syria

4 May 2023 - 11:32

While calling the deepening of relations between Iran and Syria worrisome, the deputy spokesperson of the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked the countries of the world not to normalize their relations with Damascus.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): "Vedant Patel", the Deputy Spokesman of the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed concern on Wednesday evening about the visit of Ayatollah Sayed Ibrahim Raisi, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, to Syria and the results of this trip.

During the daily press conference, Patel said: "I must say that the Iranian regime and the Assad regime continue to deepen their relations, which is worrying not only for our allies and partners and countries in the region, but also for the world at large."

In response to a question about Raisi's visit to Damascus, he claimed: "These are two regimes that continue to participate in evil and destabilizing activities not only in their neighboring countries but in the entire region."

In an effort to dissuade Arab countries from reviving diplomatic relations with Syria, this American official stated: "We still believe that we should not restore relations with the Assad regime. We do not support the normalization of other countries' relations with Damascus, and we have made this clear to our partners many times."

Patel also added: "The United States believes that the political solution mentioned in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254 is the only appropriate way for the Syrian crisis."

On Wednesday, Raisi went to Damascus at the head of a high-ranking delegation and met with Syrian President Bashar Assad and the officials of this country.

"Al-Mayadeen" network also reported that during Raisi's visit to Damascus, several memorandums of understanding will be signed between the Iranian and Syrian parties, and the economic issue is at the top of the talks between the parties.
