America extends the temporary residence permit for tens of thousands of Afghan citizens

2 May 2023 - 13:51

The United States of America gives temporary work permits to tens of thousands of Afghan citizens who entered the United States after the Islamic Emirate took over.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Joe Biden's government allows Afghan citizens who fled after the Islamic Emirate took over to stay and work in the United States.

The Associated Press quoted two informed sources as saying that as summer approaches, qualified refugees will be able to extend their temporary work and residence permits for another two years. These licenses were first issued in 2021 and were renewed last year.

This action is a temporary solution for more than 76 thousand Afghans. These people, many of whom are translators, entered the United States last year with the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, groups supporting immigrants and veterans are trying to find a permanent way for Afghans.

"The Afghans on our soil are waiting for a long-term answer, and Congress continues to gamble with their future," said Shawn Van Diver, a veteran of the Marine Corps.

However, he said that now that Congress has not been able to find a solution, issuing permits for temporary residence is also a source of happiness.

A group of American lawmakers from both parties hoped to open a path for Afghan citizens to apply for citizenship; but this plan was opposed by some Republicans.
