European Union foreign ministers in their meeting in Brussels imposed new sanctions against some businessmen and people close to the Syrian president's family.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The European Union imposed new sanctions on several Syrian citizens, including the family members of President Bashar al-Assad, on Monday night (April 24), alleging drug trade.
According to Fox News, the European Union has sanctioned these people for allegedly manufacturing and trafficking amphetamine (Captagon), which they claim helps strengthen the Assad regime.
These sanctions were approved at the European Union Foreign Ministers' meeting in Brussels, based on which the assets of 25 Syrian individuals and eight Syrian entities were seized, as well as travel bans to the European Union were imposed against these individuals.
In the statement of the European Union in this regard, it is claimed that the drug trade has become a business model for the Syrian leadership, which enriches the inner circle of Bashar al-Assad's government and strengthens the government's ability to continue repressive policies against civilians.
According to this report, the European Union has included various members of the Assad family, including cousins of Bashar Assad, leaders of militia groups and businessmen close to the Assad family. Some of the sanctioned people are army commanders and intelligence figures of the Syrian government.
According to Deutsche Presse, the European Union's foreign ministers decided to put Assad's two cousins, Wasim Badie al-Assad and Samer Kamal al-Assad, on the sanctions list because of their role in the business of what they called Captagon. "Mazar Rifat al-Assad", another cousin of Bashar al-Assad, has been included in the sanctions list without providing specific reasons.
Last month, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions against Bashar Assad's two cousins. Samer Kamal and Wasim Badi applied.
