White House officials announced on Monday (February 27) that government agencies have 30 days to remove the Chinese app TikTok from all federal devices and systems.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Reuters news agency, citing Shalanda Yang, director of the US Office of Management and Budget, reported that the White House has ordered all US government departments to withdraw from the Chinese Tik Tok program.
"All federal agencies must remove TikTok from their phones and systems in an effort to keep US information safe," the White House statement said.
This ban, which was issued late last year by order of Congress, follows similar measures that have already been taken by Canada, the European Union, Taiwan and more than half of the US states.
While the ban affects a small portion of TikTok's US user base, it also helps spur calls for a complete ban on the video-sharing app.
The American government has said that there is a possibility that the Chinese government uses the Tik Tok program to spy on the American administrations and citizens.
Officials of Tik Tok, however, had previously denied the use of this program by the Chinese government for espionage.
It has been said that more than 100 million Americans use Tik Tok on their private or company phones.
The US Congress voted in December to ban federal employees from using this Chinese-owned video program on government phones and gave the Biden administration 60 days to issue the necessary guidelines. The vote was one of the moves by US lawmakers to crack down on Chinese companies amid national security fears that Beijing is spying on Americans.
Many government organizations, including the White House, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Homeland Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had banned the use of Tik Tok on government phones before the US Congress voted.
At the same time, it has been said that the Foreign Relations Committee of the US House of Representatives is going to vote on a bill that would give President Joe Biden the authority to ban the use of Tik Tok on all telephones in the United States.
Mike McCall, chairman of the committee, said: "This bill allows the government to ban the use of TikTok or any software program that threatens the national security of the United States." Anyone who has downloaded Tik Tok on their phone has given China access to all of their personal information. This is a spy balloon program on your phone.
Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union has announced that it is against the ban on Tik Tok by Congress.
It should be mentioned that on Monday of this week, Canada announced the ban on the use of Tik Tok on government telephones, saying that this program poses a risk to privacy and security. Last week, the European Union banned its two major political institutions from using Tik Tok.
The ban on the use of Tik Tok in American government offices is taking place while the Australian government announced recently that it will collect CCTV cameras made in China from the offices of this country.
