17 Jan 2023 - 16:25

UNESCO (United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization) has informed the world by publishing a new report that 86 journalists and media workers were killed last year. However, there have been no reports of journalists being killed in Afghanistan in the past year.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Yesterday, UNESCO or the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization said in a new report: Eighty-six journalists and media workers were killed in the world last year.

According to a UNESCO report last year, an average journalist was killed every four days.

Audrey Azoli; The head of UNESCO has said that in eighty-nine percent of the cases of murder of journalists, no one has been brought to justice.

UNESCO has called this number of killed people alarming and said that "after several consecutive years of reduction in the killing of journalists, the new increase in the number of journalists killed in 2022 is alarming."

This is despite the fact that between 2019 and 2021, an average of 58 journalists were killed worldwide.

The United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization has said that due to the current situation, "there is no safe place for journalists, even in their personal time."

In this report, revenge for reporting on organized crimes, armed conflicts or increasing extremism, and covering sensitive issues such as corruption, environmental crimes, abuse of power, and demonstrations are listed as major factors in the killing of journalists.

UNESCO has said that forty-four cases, which is more than half of the murders of journalists in 2022, took place in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Mexico, as the deadliest country for journalists in 2022, has nineteen cases of killing journalists, followed by Ukraine, which is involved in a war with Russia, with ten cases and Haiti with nine cases of journalist deaths.

This is despite the fact that last year, there is no report of journalists being killed in Afghanistan in the UNESCO report.
