The Deputy Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine acknowledged that Kiev has abandoned the idea of joining NATO and that joining the military bloc is not possible in the short term.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Monitoring: "Ukraine will not take any steps to join NATO because the members of this coalition have rejected its aspirations," Igor Zhukova, Deputy Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine, told the Financial Times.
According to RIA Novosti, the official acknowledged that Kiev would not be able to join the military bloc in the short term, but expressed hope that NATO would approve the partnership.
Zhukova also called on NATO to recognize Ukraine's central role in European security at a forthcoming meeting in Madrid.
A meeting with NATO members is scheduled to determine the strategic direction of the organization, and a representative of Zelensky's office called for the removal of any Russian name as a partner in the military alliance and for "severe" warnings to Moscow.
"Do not hesitate, this is my call to NATO members when setting positions on Russia," the Ukrainian official added.
In December 2014, Ukraine amended two laws to remove the status of non-participation in the NATO alliance. In February 2019, Ukraine's parliament passed a constitutional amendment that guaranteed the country's path to membership in the European Union and NATO. Ukraine is the sixth country to receive NATO status as a partner for advanced opportunities. At the same time, the United States has said that the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO has not yet been considered, and Germany has stated that this issue is not on the agenda.
Russia has repeatedly stated that NATO's goal is a military conflict. Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said further expansion of the NATO alliance would not bring more security to Europe, as NATO has an aggressive character.
