Some radar systems have not been delivered to Kabul by the French company Thales, said Afghanistan’s Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation (MoTCA).
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)-Monitoring, Ghulam Jilani Wafa, deputy minister of MoTCA, said that talks are underway with the French company to import the radar, but there have yet to be results.
“We are negotiating with the French company (Thales) that will send nine more radar systems, based on the terms of the contract,” said Ghulam Jilani Wafa, deputy minister of transport and aviation.
According to Jilani, the French company has delivered only three of the twelve radar systems to Afghanistan so far.
Economists say that the installation of radar plays an important role in increasing revenue of the country through aviation.
“The important issue is that this helps to collect revenue from transit flights, and Afghanistan earns $65 million a year from transit flights,” said Darya Khan Bahir, an economist.
The former deputy minister of transport and aviation said that standard radar plays an important role in increasing the number of domestic and transit flights.
“The lack of proper operation of radar will cause problems for air traffic, especially for the security of air traffic,” said Imam Mohammad Varimach, a former deputy minister of transport.
According to the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, only the radar at Kabul Airport is currently active, and the radar at Bagram Airport is inactive due to a lack of personnel, and Kandahar Airport is inactive due to technical problems.
