4 Negotiators Return Home Empty Handed, Freezing Peace Talks in Doha

Afghan Voice Agency(AVA) , 27 Oct 2020 - 13:00

KABUL, Afghanistan – Four members of the negotiating team of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Saadat Mansoor Naderi, Fawzia Koofi, Matin Beg and Kalimullah Naqibi, have returned home for personal matters, according to sources, freezing the peace talks back in Doha.

Since September 12, the negotiating teams failed to agree on ground rules that will lead to the main negotiation over peace and stability in Afghanistan; disagreeing on two points the Taliban insist upon: the religious basis for negotiations and authority of the US-Taliban accord signed in February.
While key members of the team have returned home for personal reasons, critique skeptic about the future of the ongoing talks in Doha, which have yet to set procedural rules.
It was expected that the talks would be prolonged and would be complicated. It has happened now,” said Tahir Khan, an analyst based in Islamabad.
This came at a time Afghanistan, including international allies, blame the Taliban for intensifying war throughout the country amid peace efforts, with recent Taliban offensives in several provinces, including Maidan Wardar, Helmand and Takhar.
