The First Vice President of Afghanistan Amrullah Saleh claimed the Taliban had forced tens of thousands of girls into marriage throughout the country during their rule.
Speaking at the occasion of International Day of Peace, Saleh on Monday at Presidential Palace said the people of Afghanistan are a modest nation, and “if an assessment is made, tens of thousands of young girls have been forced into marriage against their will and the wishes of their families,” as quoted by BBC Farsi.
According to Saleh, what has kept this a secret is the shielding culture, which does not allow such issues to go public, calling it a unique approach in the history of Afghanistan.
The Taliban humiliate Afghan culture, women and people by their behavior in the country, he said.
The remarks came at a time the country held a ceremony to commemorate the International Day of Peace at the Presidential Palace on Monday.
