Afghan government said on Saturday it had given the Taliban a list of less than 1,000 prisoners it expects to be released by the group.
Meanwhile, the Taliban have also given the government a list of 5,000 prisoners it expects to be released.
Most of the prisoners in the Taliban list are from Kandahar, Helmand, Nangarhar and Farah provinces.
750 prisoners in the list are from Kandahar while 730 and 280 prisoners are from Helmand and Nangarhar provinces each respectively.
While National Security Council's spokesman Javed Faisal said that the government had given the Taliban the list of prisoners, a source close to the Taliban denied it.
According to the US-Taliban deal, the prisoners should have been released by March 10 when intra-Afghan talks would begin.
Prisoner releases by both sides are now expected to start on March 31.
