With an area of 27 square miles, Beijing Daxing International Airport expected to host 45M passengers annually by 2021
China on Wednesday opened a gigantic airport which is expected to become one of world’s busiest transit points.
The starfish-shaped Beijing Daxing International Airport was inaugurated by the nation's President Xi Jinping, Xinhua reported.
The Chinese news agency asserted that it would be world's largest single terminal airport.
The airport is located at the junction of Beijing's southern Daxing district and Langfang, a city in the northern Hebei province.
According to the China Daily, the airport terminal building is supported by eight giant C-shaped columns that let sunlight in which enables the minimum use of electricity for lighting.
The new airport, according to estimates of China’s Civil Aviation Administration, is expected to host 45 million passengers annually by 2021 and 72 million by 2025.
With a 70 square kilometers (27 sq miles) terminal area, the airport has four runways while it takes almost eight minutes to reach airport terminal center from the transport hub.
