Afghan forces have recaptured Warduj district in northeast Badakhshan province after five years, the country's defense ministry said on Saturday.
Around 100 Taliban militants including their shadow governor for Badakhshan, Fasihuddin, were killed in the operation to free the district, the ministry said in a statement.
Taliban’s provincial military chief Hafiz was among dozens of militant commanders killed in the operation, it said.
Dozens of militants were wounded, the statement added.
