Appointment of new police chief for Balkh sparks tensions between Noor and Government
The appointment of new police chief for northern Balkh province has apparently sparked new tensions between government and Ata Mohammad Noor, the former governor of Balkh and chief executive of Jamiat-e-Islami party.

In a statement posted online, Noor has accused the government of new conspiracies aimed at disrupting the situation of Balkh and lives of the residents of Balkh province.
Noor has urged the residents of Mazar-e-Sharif city, the provincial capital of Balkh not to attend work and has called on owners of markets and shops not to open their shops for the sake of well being of the residents of city.
The deputy interior minister for security, Gen. Khoshal Sadat had earlier said “Considering the worsening security situation of Balkh province, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has appointed Abdul Raqib Mubariz (former CRU222 Commander) as new Police Chief for Balkh.”
“Unfortunately his predecessor Akram Sami is not willing to leave his post & accept the new appointment. Raqib will be accompanied by Special Forces units. The situation is controlled & nothing to be worried about. Additional forces will also soon reach Balkh. H.E President @ashrafghani decree will be implemented without any delay or hesitation,” Gen. Sadat said in a Twitter post.
