Queen biopic takes home best film-drama while Rami Malek wins for portrayal of lead singer Freddie Mercury
AVA- In a night mostly devoid of political commentary, the 76th Golden Globes saw Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody take home the best drama globe, while the actor portraying the signature band's front man won the best actor nod.
Rami Malek's portrayal of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury had been praised for its true-to-life representation of the man whose astounding vocal range and larger-than-life stage presence continues to define a musical era.
"Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime," Malek said as he accepted his first Golden Globe. "This is for and because of you."
Adored by fans but largely panned by critics, Bohemian Rhapsody pulled off a surprise upset Sunday night, overcoming favorite A Star Is Born to win the nod, while the race-relations comedy Green Book netted the prize for best motion picture-comedy or musical.
Mahershala Ali, who played renowned pianist Don Shirley in the film, took home the Golden Globe for best supporting actor.
While Hollywood uncharacteristically stayed away from politics for most of Sunday night, Christian Bale made several barbs at former Vice President Dick Cheney after winning the best actor award in a musical or comedy for his portrayal of the Haliburton CEO, who became what many regard as the White House's most powerful number two.
"Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration on how to play this role," Bale said after winning for his performance in the political satire film Vice.
Referring to the current Republican Senate majority leader, he added: "What do you think? Mitch McConnell next?"
Glenn Close won the best actress in a drama globe for her portrayal of the spouse of a Nobel prize-winner in the Wife.
On the television side of the night, Netflix and FX tied for most awards won, with FX's The Americans winning for best drama series and the Assassination of Gianni Versace winning best limited series.
Netflix took home several awards for the Kominsky Method.
