Iran says its engagement with Taliban aimed at helping Afghan peace

خبرگزاری Afghn Voice Agency(AVA) , 8 Jan 2019 - 6:06

The Taliban are seeking peace with the Afghan government and Iran is helping the process to promote stability and peace in the country, the secretary of Supreme National Security Council of Iran told (IRNA) on Monday.

AVA- ‘Iran is peace-seeking and has no domineering intentions,’ said Ali Shamkhani on the sidelines of the International Conference on Defense and Security in West Asia held in the Supreme National Defense University in northern Tehran.
Referring to the Iran-Turkey-Russia coalition on Syria, he said, ‘We follow the Astana Peace Process. After suppressing terrorism, a joint effort is underway to finalize the constitution and transferring power to people.’
He also said the fact that many countries have sent their representatives to the conference shows that Iran is not isolated.
Shamkhani said that US sent a message asking to negotiate with Iran when he was in Afghanistan last week. He added that because the US is not trustable, Iran will not negotiate with them.
‘With its current characteristics, the US cannot be negotiating party to any country,’ he said.
Iran has taken up a policy to disappoint the US. Iran has no forces to pull out from the region. Iranian forces in the region are only advisors, he said.
‘Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Yemen are defending themselves and we have no forces in the region.’
