US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have met one another amid a rise in tensions between Washington and Moscow.
AVA- White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the two leaders held an “informal conversation” during dinner on Friday at the Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Trump and Putin were scheduled to hold a formal bilateral meeting on Saturday during the G20 summit, but Trump called it off on Thursday after tensions escalated between Russia and western-backed Ukraine when the two counties naval forces engaged in a standoff in the Black Sea.
Relations between Russia and the West have been strained since 2014 due to the conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russia's reunion with Crimea, conflicting interests in Syria.
In 2016, diplomatic relations between Washington and Moscow deteriorated over Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 US elections.
Two-way sanctions imposed in 2014 remain in place.
On Saturday, Trump is also scheduled to meet other world leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Trump administration has sticking points with all of the aforementioned countries – as well as others -- in regard to various issues ranging from military expanding and spending, trade and economic relations, diplomatic ties and other challenges linked to the global and regional status quo.
