US Special Representative on Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad and Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi have discussed efforts for the revival of Washington-Taliban talks
The former ambassador, who arrived in Islamabad from Kabul on Tuesday, also held delegation-level talks with Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and her team at the Foreign Office.
Barring a few pithy tweets from the Foreign Office spokesman, neither the Pakistan government nor the US embassy commented on the meetings. Defence officials and diplomats also attended the talks.
Pakistan would continue to play its role in a political solution to the Afghan conflict, Qureshi assured Khalilzad. The two sides agreed to continue cooperation on the Afghan reconciliation process.
Foreign Office spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisal tweeted after the meetings that Qureshi reiterated Pakistan’s efforts for achieving peace in Afghanistan.
Khalilzad will also visit Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, where he may meet representatives of the Taliban’s political office in Doha.
