Police in western Herat province have arrested 13 persons over alleged smuggling of US dollars to Iran in the past three months, an official said on Friday.
AVA- Governor Spokesman Ghulam Jilani Farhad told media that efforts had been taken to stop the smuggling of foreign currency from Afghanistan to Iran.
Afghani lost its value against US dollar in the market due to massive smuggling of dollars to Iran. Currently, one US dollar is accounted for 76 Afghanis in the market.
A money exchanger in Herat City, who wished to go unnamed, told the source around four million US dollars were collected from the Herat markets and smuggled to Iran.
He asked the government to take steps to halt the smuggling of foreign currency to Iran as the trend would further depreciate Afghani against the dollar.
