Taliban cannot win on the battlefield and should embrace President Ashraf Ghani's offer of peace talks, NATO chief said Thursday ahead of a meeting of the alliance's foreign ministers in Brussels.
AVA- The meeting will be held on Friday, where the ministers will also address Afghanistan, focusing on prospects for peace talks and reconciliation.
Addressing reporters, NATO Secretary General welcomed President Ashraf Ghani’s offer of peace talks to the Taliban, noting that the alliance “has helped create the environment for this to happen, with our practical and political support.”
Ghani made peace talks offer to the Taliban in late February, but the group recently announced start of annual spring offensive, dismissing the peace overtures as a “conspiracy.”
Stoltenberg, however, warned that the Taliban “have to understand that they can never win on the battlefield.”
He reaffirmed NATO’s support to Afghan forces including on securing the upcoming parliamentary and district councils elections.
