The Special Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Kabul met with the leader of Hezb-e-Islami Gulbuddin Hekmatyar on Tuesday to discuss the peace deal signed last year and elections.
AVA- Special Charge d’Affaires Ambassador Hugo Llorens met on September ۲۶ with Hizb- Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar,” a statement by the US embassy said.
The statement further added that Ambassador Llorens reiterated the U.S. government’s support for the success and continuing implementation of the historic peace agreement between the National Unity Government and Hizb-e Islami, and he emphasized the critical need for a broad, inclusive peace process led by the Afghan government and Afghan people.
Ambassador Llorens welcomed Hekmatyar’s stated commitment to peace and democracy and emphasized the importance of respect for human rights, constitutional norms, and freedom of expression in maintaining stability and achieving peace.
The two agreed that credible, inclusive, and transparent electiosn are crucial to achieving the shared objective of peace and prosperity for Afghans and ethnicities.
The Hezb-e-Islami party led by Hekmatyar signed a peace deal with the Afghan government in September last year after months of negotiations in a bid to open the doors for reconciliation.
