Azerbaijan and Afghanistan intend to implement joint project in ICT sector

Generally, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan have great potential for cooperation in ICT sector.

Afghanistan intends to participate in Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM) and Europe Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) projects, said the Minister of Communications of Afghanistan Amirzai Sangin at the meeting with Azerbaijani Minister of Communication and IT Ali Abbasov.

According to him, the price of 1Mbit/sec. internet is $50, while it was $4,000 2 years ago: “We could reduce the prices through fiber-optic. But we try to reduce the prices more”.

Sangin also added that Afghanistan is interested in usage of Azerspace-1: “Generally, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan have great potential for cooperation in ICT sector”.

He also invited Abbasov to the 1st International ICT exhibition-conference to he held in Kabul during the first half of July.

In turn, Abbasov said that average price of 1Mbit/sec. is $10-12 and makes 2-3% of average monthly salary: “This price is $20-25 in the developed countries. Azerbaijan is between the developing and developed countries”.

Abbasov also mentioned that Afghainstan can reduce the internet prices more joining TASIM and EPEG projects: “Azerbaijan is a coordinator in TASIM project, investor – in EPEG project and we invite Afghanistan to participate in these projects”.

Abbasov added that during next month a working group is expected to be established between the sides and a large project between Azerbaijan and Afghanistan in ICT sphere will start under the UNDP coordination.
