UK to pull out 4,000 troops in Afghanistan

David Cameron is set to announce on Wednesday that about 4,000 British troops will return from Afghanistan in 2013, cutting UK forces in the country by nearly half. 

As the Afghan National Army and police take on responsibility for security in their country, the prime minister is expected to announce plans for the larger than expected withdrawal in the Commons. 

Britain currently has 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, of which 500 are already due to withdraw this year. 

The decision to withdraw another 4,000 was agreed at a meeting of the prime minister’s National Security Council on Wednesday after Mr Cameron heard the latest assessment of the situation on the ground from General Sir David Richards, chief of the defence staff.
