Salang highway reopens for traffic

The trucks move will be let once the tunnel where heavy snowfalls kill many every winter was completely cleared.

Snowstorm that started Friday night at both northern and southern parts of the pass caused avalanches which covered a large portion of the road, and hundreds of vehicles were stranded, but the route was reopened for traffics as a result of hardworking of the highway maintenance workers, , the Salang maintenance commander, Gen. Rajab, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The workers cleared around 22 avalanches on the both sides of the 2,676-metre long tunnel on the highway that links northern Salang Pass to the south, he said.

Rajab asked all the passengers, driving along the highway to respect the traffic rules and to have other accessories, such as chains, heating systems and other things to be protected from possible dangers.

Jabul Saraj district traffic officer, Naemullah, said that they gave permission to the vehicles carrying passengers. He said they would let the trucks to move once the tunnel was completely cleared.

In winters, heavy snowfalls on the Salang pass lead to the death of many people every year. On Feb. 8, 2010 170 persons died and 125 were injured in southern Salang as a result of heavy snowstorms and avalanches.
