Ramped up security for Ashura procession

All sects in the country believed in harmony and brotherhood.

President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday directed security officials to ramp up security measures along traditional routes for Ashura processions in Kabul and other parts of Afghanistan.
Talking to a group of Shiite scholars at the Presidential Place, Karzai hoped the mourning period would pass off peacefully and without any contingency as all sects in the country believed in harmony and brotherhood.
Members of the council of ulema hailed the security measure that were taken during the past Ashura mourning procession, Afghanistan Times quoted a press statement issued by the President’s media office.

Mawlawi Ghafuri talking on behalf of other participants stated that a guide line has been devised by Shiite council of ulema in order to ensure peace and discipline during the processions of Muharam. “Under the chalked out plan, Shiite scholars would stress on Muslim brotherhood in their sermons,” he added.
Karzai linked the peaceful observance of Ashura in the past to respect for the supreme sacrifice rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his followers in upholding the supremacy of Islam.
The scholars also called for coordination among security forces and preventive measures to maintain the law and order situation and cope with any untoward incident during the processions.
The Ministry of Interior has constituted a commission involving officials from the defence ministry, National Directorate of Security and Shiite scholars to ensure better security arrangements on the 10th of Muharram, December 5.
