7 Taliban militants killed in E Afghanistan

Seven Taliban militants were killed as they came in contact with the troops in Paktika province east of Afghanistan, a press release of the U.S.-led Coalition forces in southeastern region said Sunday.

"A group of insurgents were attempting to attack the security forces in Mata Khan district on Saturday night but the troops returned fire killing seven rebels," said the press release, adding that there were no casualties on the troops.

However, it did not provide more details.

U.S. forces have their bases in Khost, Paktika and other parts of the eastern provinces.

Taliban militants who have intensified their activities have not make comment yet.

Earlier, an Afghan army officer in western Herat province Zinudin Sharifi claimed that 10 Taliban militants were killed in several-hour gun battle which was ended on Sunday morning in Shindand district.

Militancy and conflicts have been on constant rise since beginning of this spring.

Traditionally spring and summer are known as fighting season in Afghanistan. Taliban militants announced on Saturday they would launch their spring offensive from May 10.
