Registration of candidates for parliamentary elections begins in Afghanistan

Registration of candidates for parliamentary elections set for Sept. 18 began in Afghanistan on Tuesday, election body announced.

"Registration of the candidates for Wolesi Jirga or Lower House of parliament formally begins today," acting chief electoral officer of Independent Election Commission (IEC) Zakria Barikzai told a news conference here.

The process begun on April 20 would continue until May 4, he further said.

Barikzai added that the process formally began in 32 out the country’s 34 provinces on Tuesday.

However, he said that in the northeast Badakhshan and Takhar provinces, the process of registration of candidates for parliamentary elections did not begin due to technical problems.

He also said that the process of registration of candidates also started in the troubled southern region where Taliban are active.

More than 2,100 aspirants including 307 women candidates visited the IEC office last week to get information about the process before contesting for the 249 seat Wolesi Jirga or Lower House of parliament, Barikzai said.
