Afghan police uncover 700 kg explosives in Taliban hotbed

"A special unit of ANP uncovered over 700 kg of explosives during an operation in Nad Ali district on Friday," the statement said.

The ANP, supported by international coalition forces destroyed the materials on the spot, the statement said.

Police forces also detected and defused seven roadside mines and two rockets and thus foiled terrorist attacks in Helmand, Khost and Parwan provinces, it added.

The statement accused "enemies of Afghanistan," a term which has been used by Afghan officials for Taliban militants, for planting the mines to target Afghan and international troops.

Helmand province in south Afghanistan has been the scene of spiraling militancy over the past several years.
