Seven killed, 30 wounded in northern Iraq attacks

(AFP)_Four died and 23 were hurt when a bomb exploded around 10.00 am (0700 GMT) at a market in Sinjar, a town situated about 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of the restive northern city of Mosul, a police officer told AFP.

"The casualties include women and children," said Elias Kheder, a local authority official.

In an earlier attack three policemen were killed and seven of their colleagues wounded by a suicide car bomber who targeted their base northwest of Baghdad.

The incident happened in Al-Sharqat, 270 kilometres northwest of the capital, according to a police officer speaking on condition of anonymity.

Al-Sharqat is located 100 kilometres north of Tikrit, the home town of the executed dictator Saddam Hussein, in Salaheddin province.

Despite a reduction in violence across the country in the past year, attacks on security forces and civilians remain common in parts of Iraq, including in Baghdad, the restive northern city of Mosul and in the ethnically divided oil city of Kirkuk.
