Taliban were invited to Kabul, they did not take it: Karzai
Karzai: the United States came to Afghanistan to fight extremism and bring stability to his war-tortured nation and is leaving nearly 20 years later having failed at both.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA)_Afghanistan’s former president in his recent interview said that the Taliban did not take the Afghan capital by force but they were invited by him to enter Kabul as had fled.
Hamid Karzai said that the sudden and secret escape of Ashraf Ghani scuttled the plan for a negotiated agreement that would have let the Taliban take over Kabul.
He added that he himself invited the Taliban to enter Kabul so that the city and the country at all be protected from looting and chaos.
The former president recalled, he called the defense minister Bismillah Muhammadi whether any official was still staying in Kabul but he found none.
Bismillah Muhammad had told him if he wanted to leave Afghanistan but Karzai had denied leaving.
Hamid Karzai along with the government chief negotiator planned to leave for on August 14 for power-sharing talks at the time when the Taliban fighters were at the skirts of the Afghan capital.
“The Taliban leadership in Doha decided to keep the fighters at the four gates of Kabul and will only allow them to enter the city after agreement. Ashraf Ghani fled and I invited the Taliban to enter to prevent chaos and looting.” Said Karzai.
This is the first time that Karzai discloses untold stories behind Kabul’s takeover and the escape of the Ashraf Ghani.
Former Afghan President in a video clip reasoned that he fled the country to prevent damage to the city and the death of innocent people.
The Taliban leaders have also repeatedly said that they did not plan to take over Kabul as it happened instead, they wanted a negotiated agreement. Associated Press reported.
