US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has welcomed the recent progress in talks between the Afghan government and Taliban negotiators and hoped that the two sides will now agree on a comprehensive ceasefire in Afghanistan, the State Department said in a statement on Thursday.
The United States wants further progress in talks between the Afghan government and #Taliban_representatives and expects the two sides to reach an agreement on a permanent ceasefire and reduction of violence as soon as possible, State Department's statement said.
"Negotiations between the Afghan government and Taliban representatives in Qatar should lead to a reduction in violence and a permanent #ceasefire in Afghanistan," the statement furthered.
#Pompeo's_remarks come as the Afghan government and the Taliban negotiators in #Doha agreed on the procedural rules and preamble for the peace talks after a deadlock since September 12, the day peace negotiations kicked off in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
The agreement on procedural rules by both the Afghan government and the Taliban negotiators in Doha has been welcomed within and outside Afghanistan.
