U.S. Defense Secretary: ‘All Wars Must End’
Acting U.S. Defense Secretary Christopher miller has signaled that he would accelerate American Troops withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Middle East.
On his November 13th letter, which was the first since his appointment to the position, he has reportedly said “all wars must end” and “it’s time to come home”.
He has not specifically mentioned Afghanistan or the Middle East, but stressed his commitment to finishing the war that #Al-Qaeda had brought to the American shores in 2001.
United States after 19 years of war have less than 9,000 troops in Afghanistan; the country is also involved in countering terrorism in the Middle East.
“This is the critical phase in which we transition our efforts from a leadership to supporting role,” he said. “Ending wars requires compromise and partnership. We met the challenge; we gave it our all.”
This comes as the Afghan government is engaged in Intra-Afghan talks, however, no breakthrough has been reported and the violence has ramped up throughout the country with the militant fighters attacking capital and provinces on a daily basis.
#United Nations report in June says questions have also been raised over Al-Qaeda’s links with the Taliban, as the two groups still maintained ties.
