Afghanistan remains world leader in production of heroin

According to the expert, nearly 1 million drug addicts are HIV-positive. The United Nations will hold a separate meeting on drugs in 2016 .

Following the results of 2012, Afghanistan remains world leader in production of heroin,” Head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Kyrgyzstan Vera Tkachenko said at a press conference in 24.kg news agency today.

According to her, World Drug Report 2013 will be presented in Vienna (Austria) today. “It contains all the information on drug production, illegal trafficking, the consequences and the situation at the various drug markets of the world," Vera Tkachenko said.

“According to the World Report, decline in heroin and cocaine consumption was registered last year. At least 75 percent of the world volume is produced in Afghanistan. This is 14 percent more compared to the previous year," she added.
