IED proves deadly for NATO-led troops in Afghanistan

Adopting IED (Improvised Explosive Device) as weapon by the Taliban militants has been proved lethal as so far this month six soldiers of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) have been killed by the sort of attack.

The majority of the victims, according to the ISAF statements, are Americans.

Using IED as the lethal weapon against the NATO-led multinational peacekeeping forces claimed the lives of two American soldiers on Tuesday, a statement of the military alliance said Wednesday.

"Two ISAF service members from the United States were killed yesterday in an IED strike in southern Afghanistan," the statement said.

This was the third U.S. soldier killed since the beginning of February, as first one fell victim to IED blast on Monday, ISAF confirmed in its previous statement.

"An ISAF service member from the United States was killed today in an IED strike in southern Afghanistan," the alliance said in a statement released Monday.

IED strikes also claimed the life of another ISAF soldier in western Afghanistan.

Using IED has left two more ISAF soldiers dead in southern Afghanistan.

The militants rarely confront NATO-led forces heavy fire.

According to the alliance statement only one soldier has died in fire fight so far this month.

Taliban-linked militants often use makeshift bombs in targeting Afghan and the NATO-led troops based in the post-Taliban Afghanistan.

The Afghan government in a bid to check the deadly roadside bombings banned using the ammonium nitrate fertilizer last week.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai, in a decree issued late January, banned the use, production, storage and the sale of ammonium nitrate, giving Afghans 30 days to turn over any supplies to the government.

In crackdown against the contraband, ISAF forces found nearly one ton of ammonium nitrate fertilizer from a truck in the Taliban birthplace Kandahar, south of Afghanistan on Tuesday.

"An ISAF patrol spotted a disabled truck in the Zharay district of Kandahar province, searched the vehicle and found more than 900 kg of ammonium nitrate. The material will be destroyed," the statement of the alliance said the other day.

"Ammonium nitrate-based home-made explosives continue to be used in the production of IEDs causing the majority of civilian and ISAF casualties in Afghanistan," said the statement.

It also asserted, "this amount of ammonium nitrate could have produced nearly 2,000 kg of explosive material."

More than three dozen NATO-led soldiers, according to media reports, had been killed in January with majority of them in IED explosions.

Although IED often harms civilians and claim more lives than military personnel, the device has proved challenging as both Afghan and the NATO-led troops have failed to effectively curb it.
