Authorities arrested six policemen in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar after they mistakenly killed seven civilians, senior police officer Abdul Razaq said Saturday.

"A patrol team of border police mistakenly shot dead seven villagers in an outlying area of Kandahar Thursday evening and authorities arrested six members of the patrol team in connection with the case on Friday," Razaq told Xinhua.

The victims were busy in collecting wood in Spin Boldak district but the patrol team opened fire and killed them on the spot, he added.

Kandahar, a former stronghold of Taliban, has been experiencing spiraling militancy over the past few years. The latest bomb attack in Kandahar city, the capital of Kandahar province, left six civilians dead and 18 others injured on Thursday evening.
