‘75pc medical stores sans pharmacists nationwide
The Kabul University and the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) have signed an agreement on internship and work cooperation, at a time when about 75 percent of medical stores do not have professional pharmacists in Afghanistan.

AVA- The agreement was signed on Monday between Dr. Noorshah Kamawal, head of the MoPH medical drugs and products regulatory department and Kabul University chancellor Hameedullah Faroqi at the Government Media and Information Center (GMIC).

Dr. Kamawal the shortage of pharmacists was a serious problem for MoPH and currently barely 25 percent of all 14,300 functioning medical stores inside the country had pharmacists and the rest were being run by unprofessional.

The agreement comes after a Pajhwok Afghan News investigative report said as many as 12,462 medical stores have been issued work permits across the country in 1392 solar year, when 68 percent of the stores had no pharmacists.

MoPH officials had then said the ministry officials would launch an investigation to assess and terminate work permits of medical stores without pharmacists.

Dr. Waheed Majroh, MoPH spokesman, on Monday told Pajhwok over the phone that the lack of pharmacists was a serious problem in the country. “The issuance of work permits has been stopped since 1393 solar year due to the shortage of pharmacists.”

However, Dr. Kamawal during the agreement signing ceremony said the agreement would give pharmacy students of Kabul University apprenticeship opportunities and pave ground for their employment.

He said the MoPH would encourage the private sector and medical stores to hire pharmacy students in medical stores in capital Kabul and provinces.

Kamawal said about 50 pharmacists would be hired during the current fiscal year, adding “the number would be increased up to 300 individuals in the next five years.”

Meanwhile, Faroqi called inking of the agreement as an effective step towards finding jobs and building capacity of pharmacy students, saying about 100 students graduated from the Pharmacy Faculty this year.
