Afghan girls robotics team wept
Six teenage Afghan girls who have invented a robot can't physically attend a competition in the United States because visas were denied to them.

AVA- The girls, hailing from western Herat province, travelled ۵۰۰ miles to the U.S. Embassy in Kabul twice to get the one-week visas for the event, but their applications were rejected.

The inaugural competition - First Global Challenge - is expected to be held in Washington DC in mid-July.

Their robot, however, will be allowed to travel to the U.S. to compete against 163 other machines.

Roya Mahboob, who founded Citadel software company in Afghanistan and led the group of girls for the project said that the girls were disappointed when they heard the bad news about their visas. “They were crying all the day.”

First Global President Joe Sestak, who is a former U.S. Congressman, also expressed disappointment that the “extraordinarily brave young women” from Afghanistan won’t be joint others in the competition.

It is not clear why team from Afghanistan was denied U.S. entry. It comes as other teams from Iraq, Ira and Sudan were able to secure visas for the competition. Gambia is the only other team which has been denied visas.
